Installing a carbon fiber trunk spoiler is one of the best ways to enhance your cars look. This upgrade instantly gives your build a more aggressive, custom appearance. At RW Carbon, we design every spoiler for a clean fit and easy installation. You don’t need to visit a body shop. With the right tools and steps, you can install it at home. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to install a carbon fiber trunk spoiler the right way.

What You’ll Need Before You Begin

  • 3M tape (We sell this along with promotor at checkout)
  • Adhesion Promoter
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Painter’s tape
  • Microfiber towel
  • Plastic pry tool/Dental floss (for OEM spoiler removal)
  • If there is tape left over tape from the previous spoiler we use an eraser will attachment to remove the leftovers

🧼 Step 1: Clean and Prep the Surface

First, clean the trunk area where the spoiler will mount. Use alcohol or adhesive remover and a microfiber towel for this step. Make sure you remove all wax, oils, and residue for a strong tape bond.

If your car has an OEM spoiler, remove it using a plastic pry tool or dental floss. Gently lift the edge and work across the trunk. Remove any leftover adhesive and clean the paint beneath it, we use our 3M eraser wheel for this.

Once the surface is fully prepped, move on to test-fitting the spoiler.

Important Note: Ceramic Coating and Spoiler Installation

If your car has a ceramic coating, it may affect how well the spoiler adheres.
Ceramic coatings can prevent the tape from creating a strong bond with the trunk surface.

To ensure proper adhesion, you must buff the area where the spoiler will sit and remove the coating.
This step allows for a clean surface, giving the 3M tape the best chance to stick securely.

📐 Step 2: Test Fit the Carbon Fiber Spoiler

Next, align your new carbon fiber trunk spoiler on the edge of your trunk. This helps you understand how it fits and where the tape will sit.

Use painter’s tape to mark the corners or edges for reference. Make sure the spoiler is centered and follows the trunk’s lines. Don’t rush this step—it’s key to getting a perfect install. The image below you will see we marked our edges as well as a piece in the middle.

After you’ve marked the alignment, you’re ready to apply adhesive.

🛠️ Step 3: Apply the Adhesion Promoter

Before applying the tape, use an adhesion promoter on both the trunk and the spoiler. This step helps create a stronger, longer-lasting bond between the surfaces.

Start by applying the promoter to the area of the trunk where the spoiler will sit. Then, apply it to the underside edges of the spoiler where the tape will be placed. Let both surfaces dry for a few minutes before moving on.

🛠️ Step 4: Apply the 3M Tape

Apply 3M automotive tape to the bottom and top edges of the spoiler. Use continuous strips for a secure hold and press the tape down firmly.

Next, make small cut marks in the tape at the center of the spoiler — one on the top strip and one on the bottom.
These cut lines will act as peel points during installation, making it easier to align and mount the spoiler accurately.

This simple step can help avoid misalignment and save time during install.

We highly recommend doing both: trimming the tape at the edges and creating center peel points.

💪 Step 5: Install the Spoiler on Your Trunk

Carefully place the spoiler back onto the trunk using your painter’s tape marks.
Start by pressing the center area down first.

While keeping it aligned, slowly pull the exposed tape backing from each side.
Press down firmly as you go. This ensures even pressure and contact.

After the full spoiler is stuck, go back over the edges and apply strong pressure.

Inspect all edges to make sure they sit flush against the trunk.

That’s how you install a carbon fiber trunk spoiler!
